Week 9

Story Board

1. Woodfordia Dream
"Breaking with current un-sustainable practices and moving into a sustainable future"

How does Woodfordia work?
- Location to Brisbane/Queensland/Australia
- Time Line: 2012 - 2062
   - Sea Levels rise
   - Storm intensity increases
   - 'Climate Refugees' from South East Asia accepted by Australia
   - Woodfordia Commune created
      - Sustainable Education Facility for current Australian residents and incoming Climate Refugees
   - What does Woodfordia Provide?
   - What happens if nothing is done?  World continues to live unsustainably, pumping fossil fuels into the atmosphere which leads to further rises in sea levels and Super Storms that wipe out entire communities. There is still a change for positive change, Woodfordia will lead the way.

2. The Current Situation

- Society reliant on fossil fuels for energy, transport and production
- Society reliant on private car transport which only accelerates the fossil fuel problem. They cause poor health from emissions and create traffic
- Ribbon development and Urban Sprawl wastes land, destroys forrests and the environment, pushes farms further away from living spaces, this causes higher costs in food production
- Sprawl is expensive because services are pushed further away and required to be transported back to communities ie, pipes and power lines etc.

3. Woodfordia is an opportunity

'Woodfordia is an opportunity to change the current practices of society into a sustainable living system that focuses on Energy, Food, Water and Lifestyle.'

- How?
   - Answers not just in housing but in the systems that surround it.
      - Transport
      - Production/industry/farming
      - Energy
      - Environment
      - Facilities (Woodfordia festival and educational facilities)

It's all about the collective community!

4. Where to build - Master planning Woodfordia

- Housing
   - Location
   - Densification
   - Community gardens/farms
   - Relationship to environment, farming, energy, water   (mid semester sketch diagram)

   * Produce food closer to home/living spaces

What does a typical house/houses look like?

- Public Transport system

- Facilities

- Festival

5. Outcomes

- Major use of public transport system, very small reliance on cars
- Produce (food and textiles) transported and traded via the public transport system (trains)
- Housing area also the hub of food production and food markets
- The food produced by Woodfordia residents is sufficient for the community
- Woodfordia becomes and exemplar world wide
- The focus of a fossil fuel, car reliant, un0sustainable lifestyle shifted to self sustaining communities
- Woodford Provides the pattern language for new communities of climate refugees to use to set up their own community
